What to do During a Plumbing Emergency

plumbing-emergency-what-to-doIf you have water welling up from under your floor, or from behind a wall, it can be tempting to panic. However, the most important thing you can do during a plumbing emergency is to remain calm and act quickly. If you know what to do, you can limit the damage by a significant amount while you wait for your plumber to show up.

Turn Off the Water

The biggest threat in most plumbing emergencies is the amount of water damage it can inflict in a very short amount of time. The best way to prevent that from happening is to turn off the water in your home. If you can’t find a way to turn off the water to the specific part of the house with a problem, just turn off the entire flow.

You won’t be able to use the plumbing in the rest of the home, but at least you won’t have to deal with additional water damage. If you have an automatic shutoff valve in your water line, you shouldn’t have to worry about it, as the device will take care of it. If you do have an automatic valve installed, but it’s not working, shut the flow of manually and have a plumber examine the valve as well.

Clean Up the Area

The next thing you need to do is clean up the area surrounding the plumbing problem. Furniture and other objects should be moved away from the trouble spot, both to prevent them from becoming damaged and to make the problem itself easier to access for your plumber.

Once the area is cleared, be sure to mop up any water that has already spilled. This prevents the water from seeping into the wall or floor and causing further damage. This may seem like a minor step, compared to the one above, but it can still save you some money and frustration.

 Call for Emergency Plumbing Services

There are a lot of plumbing companies to choose from, but not all of them offer emergency plumbing services. When you have a major plumbing problem occur, you probably shouldn’t wait for an appointment to be scheduled. This is especially true if you have to shut off the water flow, since you won’t be able to use your plumbing system until the problem is fixed.

Or, if the issue occurs at a time outside of normal business hours, when you’re unlikely to get a typical plumbing contractor to come out. So, make sure that you call a contractor that offers emergency plumbing services. The faster you can get a professional to repair the issue, the faster you can get back to your regular routine and the better off your system will be.
