You may not be ready to think about it just yet, but it is going to be winter once again before too long. In addition to getting your heater into prime working condition and digging the shovel out of the garage, you must also be sure to give your pipes some consideration. One of the most inconvenient, and potentially costly, plumbing issues that a homeowner can encounter is the bursting of pipes due to the winter’s cold weather.
We have a few tips that should help you to protect your piping in Bloomington, IL this winter. Keep them in mind, and be sure to contact us with any questions that you may have. - Disconnect and Drain Hose Bibs. If you have exterior hose bibs on your home, and you probably have at least one, it is very important that you disconnect your hose and drain that bib to prevent any water left inside from freezing up and causing problems. If you have a shut-off valve specifically for these bibs, be sure to close that off, as well. Further protection can be achieved by investing a cheap, but effective, insulating cover for your bibs.
- Insulate Your Pipes. If you have exposed pipe anywhere in your home, including your basement, crawlspace, or connected garage, be sure to insulate them. This is a very simple process, and it is one that you can handle on your own. Most hardware stores will actually carry insulating pipe sleeves that can simply be cut down to size as needed.
- Open Up Your Cabinets. It may look strange, and you may not want to leave them open all of the time, but keeping cabinets and drawers through which any pipes pass is an effective way of helping to prevent the freezing of those pipes. It simply allows heated air from the house to circulate around the pipes more effectively. Just make sure that you remove any potentially dangerous items from cabinets accessible to young children.
