Keep Your Bathroom Plumbing Appliances in Good Condition with These Tips

showerThe bathroom has the highest concentration of plumbing appliances in the average home, aside from perhaps the kitchen. Every plumbing system in the bathroom is also probably one that you rely on every day. You wouldn’t want to get up in the morning to find your shower isn’t working, or your toilet, or your sink. So, if you want to be able to go through your daily routine uninterrupted, it’s a good idea to make sure that your bathroom plumbing systems are kept in good shape. There are a number of good ways that you can keep your various bathroom systems operating smoothly. Follow the tips below to get started.

Avoid Over the Counter Drain Cleaners

Anyone who has had to pull a giant wad of hair out of the bathtub drain knows how frustrating it is to deal with drain clogs. It can be very tempting for a lot of homeowners to deal with these occasional inconveniences by purchasing over the counter drain cleaners. They’re quick, mostly effective, and inexpensive. The problem with doing that is that the majority of drain cleaners contain incredibly corrosive materials. While these caustic substances might clear out the clog in the short term, using them over a long period of time will likely cause significant damage to the pipes themselves. If you want to keep your bathroom drains clean and healthy, have a professional clean out the drain instead of doing it with store-bought drain cleaners. Professional plumbers also do a much more thorough job, which is good for the drains.

Know When to Call for a Plumber

A big part of limiting the problems that various malfunctions with these systems can cause is being able to catch them early. The faster you can identify an issue with your plumbing systems, the faster you can have the issue repaired and the less damage it will be able to cause. There are a variety of different signs you should watch for that indicate a need for a professional plumber, including:

  • Slow Drainage: If your drains are draining more slowly than they normally area, that could indicate a clog forming somewhere in the pipes.
  • Bad Smells: If your bathroom constantly smells like an open sewer, it might indicate that there’s an issue with the sewer system.
  • Leaks: You absolutely shouldn’t ignore leaks you find in any of your bathroom appliances. Even a minor leak in the toilet or bathtub lining could lead to immense amounts of water damage in a short amount of time. Make sure you call for repairs as soon as you notice a leak in one of these systems.
  • Low Water Pressure: Low water pressure could be an indication of a leak in the plumbing system, but it could also mean that there’s a problem in the faucet itself. You’ll need to have a professional examine the system to know for certain.
