What Can Cause Drains to Smell Bad?

It is probably not news to you to hear that plumbing fixtures can sometimes emit foul odors. Just because it may be a common problem does not mean that it is a problem you should ignore or simply put up with, though. If you want to resolve issues with smelly drains, there are a number of options to consider.

You should also know what might cause smelly drains to develop in the first place, so that you can make any changes possible to avoid the problem in the future. Read on for some more information about why the drains in your home may begin to smell bad. As always, remember to schedule your plumbing services in Bloomington, IL with our team.

Problems with Ventilation

Your plumbing system has vents in it that helps to prevent sewer gases from working their way back into your living space. If your drains smell like sewer gas, it is very possible that you are dealing with blocked vents. Only a professional plumber can assess the situation and resolve any such problems.

P-Trap Dried out

Under your drains there is a pipe component called the P-trap. Basically, this is just a curved section of pipe that holds a small amount of water at all times. If that trap should dry out, it is not going to prevent odors from coming back up the drain in the way intended.

Clogs

Another somewhat more obvious cause of foul drain odors is a basic clog. Hair is often the root of the problem in such cases, though food particles, grease, etc. can also play a role. If your drains are gurgling and draining slowly, there is a good chance that this is what you’re dealing with.

Let Pipeworks Inc. handle any plumbing or drain and sewer services that you may need in your home.
