Keep Your Pipes in Good Condition With These Tips

kitchen-plumbingPlumbing pipes are selected mainly for their longevity and resistance to issues. Copper piping, which has been the standard in most areas across the country for half a century, can last for decades under the right circumstances. If you want to get as many years as possible out of your plumbing pipes, though, you’re going to need to take certain steps to keep them healthy. Let’s go over some of those steps now.

Schedule Plumbing Inspections and Maintenance

Most plumbing issues that you’re likely to run into have a tendency to creep up on you. That is, they don’t have any obvious warning signs associated with them unless they’ve had quite a long time to develop. You don’t want to wait until then to call for repairs, because it will just mean that you have to spend more to fix whatever damage the problem has managed to do. Instead, you should try to catch problems as early as possible. One of the best ways to do that is with preventive maintenance and inspections.

During a pipe inspection, your plumber will take a close look at your pipes and find any potential issues lurking in them. Those issues can be fixed before they get any worse, improving your system’s efficiency and lowering the odds of a problem advancing far enough to cause serious damage. You should have pipe inspection and maintenance services conducted on your system at least once every couple of years.

Call for Repairs if You Think You Need Them

Regular maintenance is great for keeping your plumbing system in good shape throughout the year, but it’s not perfect. You still need to be vigilant for any signs that your plumbing system is not performing the way it should, and call for repairs immediately if you notice something. Common plumbing issues and their warning signs include:

  • Leaks: Even a small leak can cause quite a bit of water damage if it’s located in the wrong place, or if it’s left alone for long enough. Make sure that you call for repairs if you notice any leaks, visible water damage, or other signs that there could be a leak in your system.
  • Lime Scale: If you know that your home has hard water issues, you need to keep an eye out for signs that your plumbing system is developing lime scale. Dropping water pressure, visible lime scale around faucets and in showers, and even difficulty getting hot water from your water heater could all indicate that you need professional lime scale removal.
  • Rust: If you have older iron pipes in your home, you should call for repairs if you notice a reddish-brown tinge to your water. That means that your pipes are shedding rust into your water supply. The pipes will likely need to be replaced in that case.
